Bringing the Bible Out of the Closet

Are there trans characters to be found in the biblical narratives? – by student blogger Maddy Oakes

Peterson Toscano is a Theatrical Performance Activist and Christian who claims to thoughtfully and humorously explore queer issues.

Toscano crafted a one-person play entitled ‘Transfigurations’: “Drawing on inspiration from interviews with transgender and genderqueer individuals, Peterson Toscano weaves their experiences into the stories of transgender and gender-variant people from the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Hilarious and moving, Toscano’s one-person play deepens well-known (and lesser-known) Bible stories as he presents an array of characters with an array of genders.”

A little disclaimer: I have not explored the ideology behind his endeavour (or seen the play) so cannot comment on Toscano’s interpretation of the biblical text in reference to the LGBT* community.  Nevertheless, the concept of Toscano’s play really got me thinking… has there been much thought or discussion of the idea that there are (or could be) trans characters in the narratives of the Bible?
