Bringing the Bible Out of the Closet

This Wednesday’s LGBT and Faith Discussion Group

This week’s LGBT and Faith Discussion is sure to be as successful as last weeks. As you may or may not know each week’s discussion will focus on a different topic or theme.

This Wednesday, Emily Reed and Antonia Self will be chairing the discussion on ‘identities’. The discussion group will be held in the Multifaith Gathering Room in the Octagon Centre at 7.30.

Below are two mini interviews with both Emily and Antonia to give you a taster of what’s to come this Wednesday (see below).

Emily’s Mini Interview:

Can you tell the blog readers who you are and what you do?

I’m a second year English student and I’m also a Christian 🙂

How are you involved with the LGBT and Faith Discussion Group?

I’m going to be chairing a discussion group session with my good friend Toni Self 🙂 even though I’m straight I believe that it’s so important to set a loving example to other Christians to accept people of the LGBT community. I see no reason for the current prejudices to exist so I want to do whatever I can to challenge them!

What topics and themes will be discussed during the session you are chairing?

We’re going to be talking about identities: so we’ll be thinking about where we place our identities (so for example, I have a tendency to base my identity in my work, and never know when to stop!), we’ll also be talking about how we perform different identities to different people, and what it feels like to hide and question your true identity (whatever we think that is!).

What are you hoping people will take away with them after the session?

I’m hoping that after the session people will have a greater confidence in their identities and discover more about how Christians deal with issues surrounding identity.

Antonia’s Mini Interview

Can you tell the blog readers who you are and what you do?

I’m a lesbian Christian and I believe that everyone has the right to love. I can’t say that I do anything special. I just try and break through people’s ignorance and fears and learn a great deal about my Father in heaven along the way.

How are you involved with the LGBT and Faith Discussion Group?

I’ve participated in LGBT events for a while now, and I’ve always wanted to have an opportunity to talk about Jesus with my LGBT friends. I was actually asked by a friend if I would be interested in leading an LGBT and Faith Discussion Group. It’s not very often that LGBT is brought up in Christian discussion or vice versa and so I always see it as a unique opportunity when the occasion arises.

What topics and themes will be discussed during the session you are chairing?

We will be looking at topics such as the issue of identity, compartmentalisation and the pressure to please others. We’ll be sharing personal experiences of things such as assuming a ‘fake’ identity and having an identity labelled onto us. Using the bible we will help introduce the different faces of Jesus and how His example can help us find our own sense of peace.
4) What are you hoping people will take away with them after the session?

I hope people will feel more reassured after coming and hearing our testimonies and the experiences of others in group. I hope that the evening will help further bridge the gap between the LGBT community and the Christian community so that sexuality and faith will stop being a choice and will become a part of who we are.
