A third option is reflective or radiant barrier insulation, which is typically made from aluminum foil laminated to a substrate such as kraft paper or a plastic film. It’s effective in warmer climates and reduces cooling costs by reflecting radiant heat away from the attic floor. It’s lightweight and easily installed, but it requires an air gap to work properly so it can become less effective over time if the reflective surface becomes dusty or dirty.
