Derma Roller – How to Get Rid of Acne Scars and Make Your Skin Look Firmer

Derma rolling is a popular DIY skin care technique that’s widely believed to reduce acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and make the skin look firmer. It’s similar to the micro-needling done in clinics by dermatologists, but a much more affordable and convenient version that you can do at home. It’s also believed to enhance the effects of serums and anti-aging products that you apply afterward.

Before you start rolling, thoroughly cleanse your face with a gentle pH-balanced cleanser, then wipe it down with 70% isopropyl alcohol to prep it. It’s also a good idea to use numbing cream before you roll, especially if your tool has needles longer than 1.5 mm—anything bigger can cause pinpoint bleeding1.

Benefits of Using a Derma Roller for Skin Rejuvenation

Once your face is ready to be rolled, apply your chosen skincare serum over the whole surface of your skin (but not around the eyes) and carefully begin rolling. Do this in vertical, horizontal and diagonal motions for about two minutes. It’s normal to see some minor swelling and redness afterward, as well as some slight peeling — but the good news is that these effects should subside within a few days.

When choosing your derma roller, Skotnicki recommends reaching for one made with either stainless steel or titanium needles. Titanium is a stronger alloy than stainless steel, meaning the needles will be more durable and won’t blunt as easily. But both will get the job done. Just be sure to buy a derma roller that is sterilized, so it can be used safely on your face and not harbor bacteria.
