A Photo lab technician turns the images captured on a camera’s film or stored in a digital camera’s memory card into finished prints. The job requires the use of different chemicals, machines and a dark room to convert the digital images into physical photographs that can be seen in person.

What is photo lab used for?

Photo lab technicians work at different local photographic service centres and laboratories as well as at photofinishing shops and retail outlets. The job requires a calm attitude, good manual dexterity and a systematic approach to the work. The technician must be able to read and understand a range of technical documents, including paper qualities, print modes and print quality requirements.

The lab technicians also provide advice and training to photographers in the area of printing and post-processing. This includes colour management and the printing process itself, and may include the use of a computer to assist in printing.
